A New Frontier in Alternative Tuition Programs

Our data suggests that well over one-third of Jewish day schools across North America offer some type of alternative or creative tuition program. An alternative or creative tuition program is defined as any tuition program other than traditional scholarship or financial aid. The most common of these programs include: “capped” or discounted tuition for middle-income families, indexed or flexible tuition, and tuition discounts for Jewish communal professionals.

Alternative Tuition Programs Around the Network

In order to provide everyone the precious and transformative opportunity to send their children to Jewish day school, Ann and Jeremy Pava have generously underwrittena tuition

subsidy that cuts the actual cost to parents to levels unprecedented in the current generation. The model currently reduces the parents' cost across the board to the following levels:

$5,000 for k-1
$7,500 for 2-5
$9,500 for 6-8
$12,000 for high school

With the help of generous donors, the board and administration at Beth Yeshurun Day School (BYDS) have been able to stand by our core value that all children

deserve a strong Jewish foundation, and therefore, we have lowered tuition costs throughout the school and enhanced our academic program, making Jewish day school education much more desirable and attainable for all families. Our tuition initiative combines a discounted rate of 20-44% for grades PreK-5th with an additional 10% sibling discount in our early childhood.

San Diego Jewish Academy's (SDJA) Open Door program cuts tuition in half at the school for Kindergarten and 9th grade, and maintains that reduction for those students for our years. As a result of the high enrollment numbers following

the program’s first year, SDJA is able to continue Open Door for 2020/2021 in Kindergarten and 9th grade, advancing its vision to eventually offer half price tuition across all grades and removing cost as a barrier for a world-class private school education.

Westchester Day School has implemented a groundbreaking income-based tuition cap program that enables families to pay a tuition amount that is discounted according to objective criteria – without even having to submit a scholarship application (all that is required is a Form 1040 to verify adjusted gross income or AGI). This year about 60% of

all families that receive financial assistance from WDS do so without filling out a scholarship application – thus bringing simplicity and dignity to the tuition assistance process.

Pearlstone is a retreat and conference center just north of Baltimore.
